Indulge in a flavorful twist on the classic breakfast strata with this Chicken Cheddar Breakfast Strata recipe. Perfect for brunch gatherings, this dish layers tender bread, savory chicken, and creamy cheeses in a rich custard that tantalizes the taste buds.

  • 1 lb chicken, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 10 large eggs
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 20 ounces frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
  • 1 loaf challah bread (about 6 cups, cubed)
  • 1 cup shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, Dijon mustard, and red pepper flakes. Stir in half of the crumbled chicken and season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter and sauté garlic, green onions, and spinach until heated through. Remove from heat.
  3. Butter an 11×13 casserole dish and place cubed challah bread inside. Pour the butter mixture over the bread and gently combine.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layer, then stir in three-fourths of the cheddar, Gruyere cheese, and Parmesan.
  5. Cover and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Let strata sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking.
  7. Sprinkle remaining cheeses and crumbled chicken on top before baking for approximately 30 minutes until golden brown.
