  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in the flour to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes without browning.
  4. Gradually whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream until smooth and thickened (about 3-5 minutes).
  5. Season the sauce with salt, black pepper, mustard powder, and smoked paprika.
  6. Stir in 3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
  7. Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce until well coated.
  8. Pour into the prepared baking dish and top with remaining cheddar cheese (and breadcrumbs if desired).
