Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½4 cups flour
  • 2¼ tablespoons yeast
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • ¾ cup + 2 tablespoons warm water
  • ¾ cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Filling: 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup flour
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 box Instant chocolate pudding mix
  • ½ cup cocoa

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit until frothy (about 5 minutes).
  2. Add melted butter, sugar, salt, and egg yolk; mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add flour to form a soft dough; knead on low speed for about 5 minutes.
  4. Transfer to a greased bowl and let rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1 hour).
  5. Mix filling ingredients together in another bowl until smooth.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread the filling evenly on top.
  7. Roll tightly into a log, slice lengthwise to expose layers, twist halves together like a braid and place in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes before baking at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes.
  9. Prepare syrup by dissolving sugar in water over medium heat while babka bakes.
  10. Pour syrup over the warm babka after baking.
