  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)
  • 24 tablespoons chopped pecans or almonds

Instructions

  1. Line a 9×13 inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine butter, sugar, water, and salt. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until melted.
  3. Allow the mixture to simmer without stirring until it reaches a deep amber color (285°F – 290°F), about 20 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the hot mixture into the prepared pan and let it cool for about 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the warm toffee layer and wait 10 minutes until melted. Spread the chocolate evenly using an offset spatula.
  7. Top with chopped nuts and allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.
