Ingredients

  • 650g strong white flour (5 cups)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 400ml lukewarm water (1 2/3 cups)
  • 1 ½ tsp caster sugar
  • 7g dried instant yeast
  • 40g vegetable shortening (cold, chopped) (3 tbsp)
  • Rice flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve sugar in lukewarm water and add yeast. Let it sit until bubbly.
  2. In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Rub in the vegetable shortening.
  3. Make a well in the dry mixture and pour in the yeast mixture; stir until combined.
  4. Knead the dough using a dough hook for about 10 minutes until elastic.
  5. Shape into a ball and place in a greased bowl; cover and let rise until doubled in size (1 to 1½ hours).
  6. Flatten the dough, shape into rolls, and place on a lined baking tray; let rise again until plump (about 1 hour).
  7. Preheat oven to 230°C (450°F) and bake rolls for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool before serving.
